Horse training is fun! – Carolyn Resnick
I started thinking about what causes people to abuse horses when the horse doesn’t perform for them exactly like they would like or what causes somebody to overlook the responsibility of continuing to train their horse.
I came to the conclusion that the person really does not enjoy the process of training. They don’t realize that training itself can be such a pleasure.
I think of it like opening up a package because we are really excited about just finding out what’s inside. That is what makes training so that it is not abusive because we really don’t expect any bottom line on it. We are just happy with whatever results we get.
We look at the results that we have and then we continue on until we get the results that we want. Whatever happens is perfectly fine. It doesn’t matter whether it happens in one short training session or over several months or even if we don’t get it done at all. A person that really loves training and loves horses does not slip into being too submissive or too aggressive.
So think about how you could find the excitement of owning the horse not in the use of the horse but in the actual training. Because for me, the training is what causes life to be real pleasure because I’m never quite sure exactly what my day with my horse is going to look like. It stays fresh and alive and I am happy that no matter what stage we are in the training process, I can go out and train my horse and he happily volunteers to have that experience with me. That is exciting.
